More often than not, there will be space rocks all over the place and these can often be hiding hostile structures or hidden resources. This isn’t to say these areas feel claustrophobic because they are both massive and covered in a whole manner of things to interact with. Unlike games like Elite, in Everspace 2 each location you visit is still limited by a border that you cannot pass. As this is an early access game much of the story is told though place holder art but already I can see myself enjoying the main story arc. There is now a full campaign to lead you through the games various locations and systems. You can now gad around the galaxy in a much more free form manner, taking on missions and growing your ship’s prowess on the way. Well, the fine folks over at Rockfish Games thought they would like to change things up a bit and thus for the sequel we have a far more open space approach. I, like many others, thoroughly enjoyed the explosive combat and visual splendour of the various stages, but after experiencing the freedom of games like No Man’s Sky it left me feeling a little boxed in. However, as your trusty ship exploded into space dust it was s time to start over in true roguelike fashion. The idea was to move from each encounter, gathering experience and progression with each fight. The original game was sold as a space-based action shooter wrapped in a decent roguelike. Since then I have not felt the same rush playing a space game, that was until I booted up Everspace 2.Įverspace 2 is the sequel to the 2017 space shooter of the same name (minus the two of course ). The space battles were incredible but the sense of scale was also key to how good it was when hurtling between massive Dreadnought’s and fending off hostile ships in every direction. In 1999 Interplay released Freespace 2, a space shooter that was action all the way. These meaty space sagas are incredible for what they do, but sometimes I just want to do a Luke Skywalker and fire a salvo of blaster fire into something very large. Start Citizen is also an impressive prospect but is woefully behind in production to the point many predict it will never reach 1.0 in any meaningful state. At the heavy end of the spectrum, we have Elite Dangerous, a full-on simulation-based in our own galaxy with a good degree of futuristic licence to boot. In their hiatus, I guess you could say they became more like teenagers in that they are getting very complex, demanding and serious. After what seems to be a very long time space games are becoming a popular genre once more. I miss the early days of space games, titles like Tie Fighter that was just about pure exhilaration and flying by the seat of your pants.
